After winning the toss and opting to bat first on a tricky Wankhede wicket, India got off to an excellent start as the opening duo of Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill added an impressive partnership of 80 runs for the first wicket. However, the visiting New Zealand team came back strongly to pick three crucial wickets in quick succession. Kiwi left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel first got rid of both Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara. He then got the prized scalp of Indian captain Virat Kohli, who was quite disappointed with the umpire’s decision.
