The abandoned BBL match between Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers on Sunday could be rescheduled, confirmed Cricket Australia. The match was abandoned due to an “unsafe pitch”.
Only 6.5 overs of play was possible on Sunday after Melbourne Renegades won the toss and opted to bowl first. The match was called off due to pitch conditions with the umpires unanimously coming to this decision.
Ground staff at Simonds Stadium, Geelong had spent the day trying to fix the pitch after water leaked through the covers during heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Despite their best efforts the water spilling through the covers could not be drained out completely.
Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers Match Abandoned On Sunday
Given that the match was called off due to some unforeseen conditions, Cricket Australia has now come out with a statement saying that the match could be rescheduled.
“The pitch at GMHBA Stadium was rain-affected in the days prior to the game. Ground staff worked throughout the day to rectify the situation, and umpires considered the pitch safe for play to start,” Cricket Australia’s statement read.
“However, in the seventh over, umpires abandoned the game, deeming there was a foreseeable risk to the safety of the players. “Each team will receive one point unless the game can be rescheduled. Fans will be refunded the cost of their tickets” the CA statement further read.
Cricket Australia To Conduct Thorough Review: Adam Voges
Meanwhile, Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges was left disappointed with how things panned out. He shared his opinion on the same as well.
“CA will conduct a thorough review into the extremely frustrating circumstances that have resulted in the game being abandoned and a huge disappointment for fans and players.” I think we were all a little bit concerned before a ball was bowled tonight with the state of the wicket,” he said, as quoted by Perth Now.
“There was clearly a patch on the wicket that had been affected and had water on it, so I don’t think any of us are overly surprised by how it played, but it’s disappointing. It looked like it got worse over those six overs. We’re just thankful no one has been seriously injured out of this,” Voges further said on how the wicket looked before the start.
The Perth Scorchers coach concluded by saying that he was disappointed at how the game ended as they were desperate for points.
