Indian leg-spinner announces retirement post Asia Cup snub

Amit Mishra has called time on his remarkable career, bringing an end to a remarkable journey that spanned over two decades on September 4. Ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, the Indian leg-spinner has announced his retirement from all forms of the game.

Mishra, who was known for his clever variations, built a reputation as one of India’s most reliable spinners. He has represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is. The spinner has 76 Test wickets, 64 ODI wickets, and one wicket in the T20I cricket to his name.

However, the Indian spinner’s career was marred by persistent injuries, but he is now determined to mentor new generations on the international stage.

Amit Mishra said in a statement as quoted by IANS: “These 25 years of my life in cricket have been nothing short of memorable. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, the administration, the Haryana Cricket Association, the support staff, my colleagues, and my family members who were with me all this while.”

He further noted, “I would like to thank the fans whose love and support whenever and wherever I played made the journey memorable. Cricket has given me countless memories and invaluable learnings, and each moment on the ground has been a memory I’ll treasure for life.”

Amit Mishra’s 22-year journey in numbers

Meanwhile, Amit Mishra’s journey with India started in 2003 in an ODI series in Bangladesh. In 2008, he made his Test debut in Mohali and made an instant impact, taking five wickets against Australia. One of his biggest achievements came in 2013 when he took 18 wickets against Zimbabwe.

The spinner scalped 18 wickets in the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe and equalled Javagal Srinath’s world record. In the 2014 T20 World Cup, Mishra took 10 wickets and helped India reach the final. His last appearance in the India jersey came against England in a T20I in 2016.

Amit Mishra’s record-breaking IPL career

However, the leg-spinner continued playing in domestic cricket and the IPL. He finished as the IPL’s seventh-highest wicket-taker with 174 wickets in 162 games at an average of 23.82 and an economy of 7.37. He is also the only bowler in IPL history to claim three hat-tricks.

Interestingly, Mishra achieved three hat-tricks in the IPL for three different teams—Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He played his last game in the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2024.

He was also a match-winner for Haryana. He has 535 wickets in 152 first-class games, 252 wickets in 152 List-A games, and 285 wickets in 259 T20 games to his name. Now, at 42, Mishra has decided to retire from the game, but his connection with the game will continue. He will guide young players, do commentary, and connect with fans on social media and YouTube.
