BCCI sets aside window in March 2023 for inaugural edition women’s IPL
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sets aside a window in March 2023 for the inaugural season of the Women’s Indian Premier League according to BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI has adjusted the schedule of Domestic Women’s Cricket Season to make a room for first edition of Women’s IPL.
Earlier BCCI has announced that Domestic Women’s Cricket Season will kick start from November and will end on April but now BCCI has moved the start one month earlier. Now the Season will start with T20 Matches on 11 October and will end on February 2023 with ODI Matches.
The BCCI has been running the Women’s T20 Challenge since 2018.
In Women’s T20 Challenge there is only three teams who played 4 exhibition matches but now fans and international players wants a full fledged women’s IPL similar to Men’s IPL.
The women’s IPL will take place next year, Ganguly had stated earlier this in February. “We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men’s IPL.”
West Indies Cricket Board also announced a Women’s CPL inaugural season which will take place in September 2022 including three teams which is owned by Knight Riders Group, Rajasthan Royals also.
BCCI will take a Final call of Women’s IPL inaugural season on its Annual General Meeting in September 2022.
Women IPL 2023: All you need to know about inaugural WIPL
The first edition of WIPL will be played in March of 2023 before IPL 2023.
The tournament is expected to be played over two weeks with 19 matches expected.
The WIPL will follow the league and playoff format with the top four going through to the playoffs.
A decision on home and away will be taken later.
To cut cost, the BCCI may decide to have the tournament in Maharashtra with multiple stadiums available at disposal.
The six WIPL franchises will be auctioned at the end of the year.
Existing IPL teams have already shown interest in owning women’s teams.
As for WIPL Media rights, it will be deliberated at the AGM in September.
A final decision on WIPL is expected after the AGM.
