Rohit Sharma, on Wednesday (May 7), announced his retirement from Test cricket. The Indian batting star announced his decision on Instagram.
A recent report stated that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel decided to remove the Mumbai star as the captain of the Test team ahead of the upcoming five-match series against England that will kickstart India’s campaign in the new World Test Championship cycle. The selectors reportedly want a young player to lead the team in the new cycle.
Rohit’s poor form with the bat forced the Indian selectors
The report also stated that the main reason behind the selectors’ decision was Rohit’s poor performance in Tests. Under his captaincy, India suffered heavy losses against New Zealand and Australia last season and failed to qualify for the upcoming WTC final.
His performance with the bat during both series was disappointing as well. Against New Zealand, he scored only 91 runs in 6 innings at an average of 15.16. Rohit’s poor batting continued against Australia as well, as he scored only 31 runs in 5 innings at an average of 6.20.
