Rohit was at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, January 19 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee anniversary celebrations for the iconic venue.
Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium celebrated its 50th anniversary in a grand event at the venue on Sunday, January 19. Several Mumbai legends including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri marked their attendance to celebrate the feat. India ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma also made his presence felt.
Taking the centre stage, Rohit opened up on his ambitions to lift the silverware in Dubai at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Indian skipper expressed that once the team wins the tournament, they will bring the trophy for a fan parade at the Wankhede Stadium in a similar way to what they did with the T20 World Cup win in 2024.
“We will try our best (to win the Champions Trophy). I’m sure that the wishes of 140 crore Indians will be behind us when we land in Dubai for the Champions Trophy. We will try to do well and bring the Champions Trophy 2025 to the Wankhede Stadium (once we win),” Rohit said.
India’s journey in Champions Trophy
In 2002, India shared the Champions Trophy, then called ICC KnockOuts, as an abandoned match ended up without a result, where the Men in Blue were captained by Sourav Ganguly. However, 11 years later, the trophy was all theirs, as MS Dhoni led the way in 2013, where Shikhar Dhawan (Golden Bat winner) and Ravindra Jadeja (Golden Ball winner) emerged as the star performers.
In 2017, India entered the event to defend their title, this time, under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. The opposition Pakistan, however, overcame the India threat and beat them for the first time at an ICC event to clinch the latest edition.
In 2025, India will start their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by the high-stakes clash against Pakistan, and then for the last league stage game against New Zealand. It is to be noted that India will be playing the entirety of the tournament in Dubai at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS), including the semi-final and final, if they qualify.
