Kuldeep Yadav is currently a little ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal: Ajit Agarkar

In a press conference held in the presence of skipper Rohit Sharma, India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar disclosed the tough selection process that led to the exclusion of leggie Yuzvendra Chahal from the Asia Cup 2023 squad. The upcoming continental tournament has garnered considerable attention due to the team’s decision to opt for one wrist spinner, favouring Kuldeep Yadav over Chahal.
Agarkar emphasised the challenge of accommodating two wrist spinners within the team’s current strategy, stating,
“Axar Patel has done really well. Kuldeep Yadav has had a fantastic run to this point. So someone had to miss out. Kuldeep is currently a little ahead of him (Chahal).”
Kuldeep’s good performance this year, with seven wickets in three ODIs and eight wickets in seven T20Is, has undoubtedly bolstered his selection. The discussion around the choice of spinner also involved the player’s batting abilities. Skipper Rohit Sharma mentioned,
“We also want someone who can bat at number eight and nine. Axar has had a great run with the bat in all formats and the IPL.”
The inclusion of Axar Patel brings not only a left-hand batting option but also the flexibility to counter-spin. While Chahal’s omission is confirmed for now, Rohit Sharma affirmed the door remains open for all players. He expressed, “If we need Chahal in the (ODI) World Cup, we will try to squeeze him in. The same goes for (Ravichandran) Ashwin and Washington (Sundar).”
