Openers in white-ball cricket don’t get much time to settle down as they aim to go berserk from ball one as they are entitled to give a good start to the team in the powerplay. Over the years, veteran Australia batter David Warner has mastered the art, scoring 6030 runs in 142 ODIs and 2894 runs in 99 T20I matches. Recently, the swashbuckling cricketer opened up on his mindset and explained the role of patience in his game and how he developed that as one of his strengths.
In replying to CricTracker, Warner mentioned that patience doesn’t really mean playing defensively as according to him, it means playing to one’s merit. The southpaw added that if he goes with the intention of taking some time to settle down, that results in a lack of runs and he eventually throws his wicket without scoring much. Thus, he believes that playing aggressively is his way of being patient.
“Patience is a big thing in cricket. Patience is a different thing in my mind. If I am looking to score and trying to be attacking, that’s my patient way. It might sound silly but that’s how I play. I think if I am being too patient, then I’m not being able to score in any format. You can get bowled down easily. So, I feel that’s my kind of patience.
“It’s a hard one to actually explain. The great batsmen in the world, everyone says has got great patience but that’s the way they bat. So, I look at patience in a different kind of way,” Warner replied to CricTracker in a video shared by Star Sports.
